Concert Band - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.870372 Composed by Randy A. Steinberg. Contemporary,Latin. Score and parts. 156 pages. Randy A. Steinberg #1885815. Published by Randy A. Steinberg (A0.870372). Born in 1485, Hernando Cortez was a Spanish adventurer rewarded for his courage and skills in battle. In the spring of 1519 with 11 ships and 700 men, he landed on the newly discovered gulf coast of Mexico looking for gold that was rumored to be found there. To ensure that none of his men deserted him, he burned all except one of his fleet of ships. He quickly conquered the Aztec empire and its emperor Montezuma. There, he eventually killed Montezuma and seized the gold and treasure that had belonged to the Aztecs for centuries. By the end of 1520, he had won Mexico for Spain and put it under Spanish rule. As a reward, King Charles V of Spain made him governor and captain general of Mexico. He died in Seville, Spain in 1536. Although Cortez’ aims were for conquest and gold – many which resulted in suffering and misery for the Aztecs, there were interesting cultural side effects as Spain ruled Mexico. Ancient Indian folk tunes and ceremonial music were suddenly intermixed with the higher culture of the baroque and renaissance music from Spain. Much of what we now know of today in the way of Latin styles of music owes its roots to the invasion of Cortez and culture changes he inadvertently brought with him. The Golden Helmet Of Cortez musically commemorates the story of Cortez as he landed in Mexico on that spring day in 1519. The piece is a compilation of many Latin and Mexican musical styles. Some of these are light in style, others evoke the battles that took place. These are all brought together in an exciting programmatic style to be enjoyed by all. 2016 Arrangement New Release.

Concert Band - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.917395 Composed by GregoryFritze. 20th Century,Contemporary,Jazz. Score and parts. 195 pages. Musica Nova USA #4805407. Published by Musica Nova USA (A0.917395). La Tomatina was composed in 1996 in Buñol, Spain while I was researching Spanish band music. Buñol is a small town of about 9,000 inhabitants about 19 miles (30 kilometers) from Spain’s 3rd largest city, Valencia. For 364 days of the year, it is a typical small town, but on the last Wednesday of August it becomes an international attraction. On that day the La Tomatina festival is held. Several trucks drop as many as 145,000 kilograms of tomatoes unto the main street and for an hour at 12:00 noon there are up to 100,000 people taking part in throwing tomatoes at each other. At 1:00 everybody goes to the specialpublic showers to wash up. A fire truck comes down the street washing down the buildings and the main street and by about 2:00 all is returned to normal and all references to the tomato fight are gone. Thetradition has been going on since 1945. I was in the streets taking part in throwing tomatoes for three years. After that when I was in Spain during the festival I watched it on TV.Buñol also has a rich tradition of having two very good concert bands – the Litros and the Feos. Most of the 9,000 inhabitants formally belong to one of the two social clubs. There are several band competitionsheld in Spain and both of these bands take part. The band competition is fierce as bragging rights are won by the winning society. It is thought that this fierce competition is what helps develop excellentmusicians in that many young people become professional musicians and play in many orchestras and bands throughout the country.La Tomatina was premiered by the U. S. Army Band Pershing’s Own on the U. S. Capital steps in June 1996, the composer conducting. La Tomatina is the second movement of SinfonÃa de Valencia, a three- movement composition that was premiered in Buñol by the band of Centro Instructivo Musical El Litro Buñol, conducted by Francisco Tamarit in August 1997. SinfonÃa de Valencia is recorded by the band of Centro Instructivo Musical El Litro Buñol, conducted by Fernando Bonete Piqueras on Mark Records (CD3816). La Tomatina is also on Youtube with video of the festival at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bbpZU7vK3PQ.La Tomatina was a winning composition in 1996, awarded a grant by the Massachusetts Cultural Council. It also won the IBLA Grand Prize in Sicily, Italy in 1998 and was a Semi Finalist as part of the American Prize Composition Competition – Band Division in 1996.This arrangement of La Tomatina was prepared especially for conductor Natalia Montañés in 2004. In thisarrangement there are four percussionists instead of the original five.La Tomatina has been very popular among bands around the world, performed over one hundred times.

Concert Band - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.917403 Composed by Gregory Fritze. 20th Century,Contemporary,Instructional,Standards. Score and parts. 286 pages. Musica Nova USA #4967651. Published by Musica Nova USA (A0.917403). Pico del Teide is a 17 minute symphonic poem for concert band, grade 5. It was composed to feature the orchestral differences and colors in the symphonic band. There are several featured soloists throughout the piece, especially a long extended solo for alto saxophone. The piece also uses many textural variations showing several sections of chamber music. Pico del Teide is often selected as a contest piece when bands compete, especially in Spain. Pico del Teide was composed in 2005 and was premiered March 10, 2006 by Felipe Neri and the Banda Municipal of Tenerife. It won First Prize in the II Concurso Bienal de Composición de Música para Banda Ciudad de Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain. The piece is programmatic as it depicts a person climbing through the different sections of the Teide mountain - Los Roques, Las Cañadas, Pico del Teide, Teide and Pico Viejo to the top of Pico del Teide, which is the highest point in the Canary Islands.Gregory Fritze is a prize-winning composer and Fulbright Scholar, as well as an active performer and conductor. El Noi de la Mare — Catalan carol for concert band

Concert Band - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1118114 Composed by Traditional. Arranged by Todd Marchand. Christmas,Folk,Holiday,Traditional. Score and parts. 29 pages. Con Spirito Music #719634. Published by Con Spirito Music (A0.1118114). “El Noi de la Mare†(“The Mother's Childâ€) is a traditional Catalan carol of the nativity. The song is sung from the perspective of children who, upon seeing the Christ Child, ask “What should we give to the Child of the Mother?†First they choose their best-tasting foods: raisins, figs, walnuts and olives; then, a blanket for warmth from the cold. Finally, angels descend from Heaven to cradle the Child, singing “songs of glory that are not of the world.â€The carol may date from 18th-century Catalonia, which is today an autonomous community of Spain lying mostly on the northeast of the Iberian Peninsula, with Barcelona — Spain's second-most populous city — as its capital. The Spanish guitar master Andres Segovia (1893-1987) often performed Miguel Llobet's (1878-1938) transcription of this simple, lovely tune as an encore. This arrangement is an ideal vehicle to teach lyrical playing and legato style; dynamic control and the shaping of phrases; and the “handing-off†of phrases and phrase segments from one section to another to sustain and complete a musical idea. Ranges and technical demands are conservative, yet rich harmonization and colorful instrument combinations make this very satisfying, musically.©Copyright 2022 Todd Marchand / Con Spirito Music (ASCAP). Concert Band - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1098365 Composed by Giuseppe Verdi. Arranged by Francesco Buono. Classical,Opera. Score and Parts. 121 pages. Francesco Buono #702227. Published by Francesco Buono (A0.1098365). STRIDE LA VAMPA! from II Act of “Il Trovatore†for Contralto or Mezzosoprano Voice or Bb Cornet Il Trovatore is the second opera in Giuseppe Verdi's popular trilogy created between Rigoletto and La Traviata. Il Trovatore is a drama in four acts and eight pictures, set in Spain at the beginning of the 15th century, which tells, with a beautiful expressive song, flaming passions such as love, jealousy, revenge, hatred and lust. Manrico and the Count of Luna, in love with the same woman, face each other until death as enemies, without knowing that they are brothers. Belonging to two different social classes, they only share Leonora's love which doubles the existing hatred of social conflict. STRIDE LA VAMPA! At the foot of a mountain, in a camp, some gypsies dedicated to their activities cheer their work with songs, dances and toasts (gypsy chorus: See the gloomy nocturnal remains). A pained voice bursts into the general cheerfulness: having woken up from her recurring nightmare, Azucena, mother of Manrico, tells that many years before her she saw her mother die at the stake accused of witchcraft by the old Count di Luna (Stride la vampa) . Her mother's last words had been a plea for revenge, so she had kidnapped the Count's son still in diapers and, blinded by her desperation, decided to throw him into the fire; however, horrified by the vision of her dead mother, she had confused her own son with the child she had kidnapped and had thrown him into her stake in her place.

Concert Band - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.746511 Composed by Keith Terrett. 20th Century,Patriotic,World. 32 pages. Keith Terrett #1989071. Published by Keith Terrett (A0.746511). A slow march I entitled The Royal Hussar, is an original ceremonial slow march of mine, suitable for indoor or outdoor performance. Slow March: This is a ceremonial pace, used for funeral marches and when a unit’s colours are marched out in front of the troops. The feet are kept parallel to the ground and the arms are never used. In the United States Marine Corps, arms swing as the distance they normally would in quicktime, but at the same pace as marching. U.S. Marine Color Guards do not swing their arms. Slow March is typically used in the Marine Corps for funeral details and ceremonies such as the Marine Corps Ball (when the cake is escorted out). In Spain, Latin America, and the Philippines this is done during religious processions whenever a military band joins it. This march style is the official parade march in the armed forces of Bolivia and Ecuador and the military academies and schools of Venezuela, done with the goose step during parades and ceremonies. The standard pace is 60 paces per minute. Famous slow marches include:Preobrajensky Regimental Slow March Presented to the Royal Marines by Admiral of the Fleet The Earl Mountbatten of Burma on 10th June 1964 and first performed as the Regimental Slow March of the Royal Marines on Horse Guards Parade that night. The march was composed by the Russian composer Donajowsky for the Russian Tzar’s Preobrajensky Guard. The Royal Hussars Slow March ’Coburg’, a tune composed by Haydn and arranged by Grant-James in the late 19th Century, is without doubt one of the most well-known and famous Slow Marches to be written. ’The Eagle’, which itself is a combination of the 14th and 20th Hussars slow marches is also a very strong march, but not widely known outside 14th/20th King’s Hussars’ circles. The Garb of Old Gaul (sometimes given as Auld Gaul) is an 18th-century patriotic Scottish march and song about Highland soldiers during the Seven Years War. The music was written by General John Reid, who was a senior officer of the 42nd Regiment of Foot (The Black Watch) during the Seven Years War. The words have traditionally been attributed to Sir Harry Erskine (1710 -1765). Robert Burns described it as This excellent loyal Scottish song and states that it first appeared in print in Herd’s Collection of 1769. Alternative titles include The Highland Character and The Highland or 42nd Regiment’s March. The tune was originally a quick march but was later rearranged as a slow march. Other famous slow marches of the British Army include Golden Spurs & Scipio. Put away Scipio, Coburg & Garb of Old gaul, time for a newcomer on the block! Ayotte Custom Musical Engravings #2966795. Published by Ayotte Custom Musical Engravings (A0.733068). Cádiz is a comic-lyric-dramatic national episode (zarzuela) in two acts, divided into nine paintings, with music by Federico Chueca and JoaquÃn Valverde, with a libretto by Javier de Burgos. It premiered at the Teatro Apolo in Madrid, on November 20, 1886. It's an epic piece of music inspired by the landscape of the Ifach peak, located in Calpe (Alicante, Spain) and also by the escape of Edmond Dantès from the Chateau d'If, a prison island in the Mediterranean Sea. Both landscapes share the if part, that's why I mixed them into a piece of music.

Published by Musica Nova USA (A0.917412). The Four Seasons in the Basque Country is a 4 movement symphony for concert band. It is the Third Prize Winner of the 2020 American Prize in Composition - Concert Band. Grade 5, duration 27 minutes. The piece depicts four different places in the Basque country that the composer feels best show the changes of season. The first movement is Winter in the Costa Norte (Galerna). Galerna is on the northerncoast and is subject to harsh storms in the winter. As the piece starts off with a light-hearted dance in thepiccolo, a storm is approaching from afar. At first the storm seems to be in the distance but as it comes closer it overtakes the festivities in a bluster. For a short time two conductors are needed as the concertband is split into two groups – one showing the light-hearted dance led by the piccolo, the other thecacophony of the storm led by the percussion. The storm overtakes everything as it ends the movement with a flourish. The second movement Spring in Rioja Alavesa is a calming contrast to the first movement like the freshness of a spring day. The sun rises and shines beams of light onto the acres of grape vines. After a timea short rain comes to refresh and clean the plants. The third movement Autumn at the Guggenheim Museum is in a traditional 3rd movement form of a symphony, minuet and trio, but the harmonies sometimes use bitonality, having the melody in one key while the accompaniment is in another to suggest surrealism. The Guggenheim Museum in Bilbaois one of the world’s most famous museums, not only for the surreal art inside, but also because of the architecture of the building itself. The fourth movement Summer in Bilbao is based on a dance melody composed in the Ezpata- dantza Basque style. It employs a rhythmic element with alternating 6/8 and 3â„4 meters where the eighth notes are basically equal, but in the dance the 3â„4 meter is actually a little bit longer. This type of subtlemanipulation of rhythm is used similarly in the Viennese Waltz, when the 3rd beat would be stretched outto accommodate the dancers. The Ezpata-dantza dance continues until the Altza Gastiak, the officialsong of the Bilbao Athletic Club, the local soccer team of Bilbao, is heard. After this the Ezpata-dantzamelody is transformed from a happy dance to a triumphant melody and rousing finale. In The Four Seasons in the Basque Country all of the themes are original except for the short excerpt ofAltza Gastiakin the 4th movement. Some themes are composed in the style of Basque folk dances.Gregory Fritze is a prize-winning composer and Fulbright Scholar, as well as an active performer. He recently retired from Berklee College of Music where he was Professor and Chair of Composition, serving on the faculty from 1979 to 2016. Concert Band - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.881254 Composed by Gary Powell Nash. Contemporary. Score and parts. 175 pages. Gary Powell Nash #4727399. Published by Gary Powell Nash (A0.881254). During the 2006-2007 academic year, Nash was fortunate to travel to Ghana, Spain and Vietnam. These experiences were quite profound and resulted in Nash composing new works that reflect those experiences. KORA’S SONG AND DANCE (2009) for symphonic wind ensemble is his first large ensemble composition written under this premise. Kora is a 21 stringed musical instrument from West Africa and KORA'S SONG AND DANCE is largely based on the tune Diabate’ by singer/songwriter Vieux Farke’ Toure’ of Mali. Diabate’ is also the name of well known kora musician, Toumani Diabate’ in which Toure’ dedicated the song to. KORA’S SONG AND DANCE uses melodies that are derived from the drone motif in Toure’s Diabate. Diabate’ is a medium tempo song with the drone motif occurring throughout and improvised melodies on top of the drone. KORA’S SONG AND DANCE begins with a slow introduction, featuring the alto sax and marimba. The rest of the ensemble gradually enters and builds to the end of the intro, transitioning to the next section by way of metric modulation. The next section builds with layers of instrumental textures, much like the intro and concludes with an English horn and piano duet. This particular pattern of musical events repeats, transitioning back to slow music, reminiscent of the intro and then ends big by going back to the faster tempo.
